I stare at Sarah in utter shock “What the hell are you talking about?” I ask her after my brain kicks into gear. “What do you mean your ‘only hope will be destroyed’?”
She lets out a growl of frustration “Tommy we don’t have time just now, if we don’t get you out of here they will get you.”
Planting my feet on the ground I say, “I am not going anywhere until you explain to me what the hell is going on.”
Before she can answer a snarling roar splits the silence of the night, I can feel the bottom of my stomach falling away, as my brain screams at me to run. “What the hell is that?” I ask, my voice breaking a little from fear.
“That is what I’ve been trying to get you away from,” Sarah replies testily.
“Well, shouldn’t we be running?”
“No not at all, you wanted to know what was going on, so why don’t we just sit and have a nice long chat over some coffee?” she replied, her voice oozing with sarcasm.
I just stare at her, my entire body shaking with fear, she looks at me rolls her eyes and grabs my hand again, taking off at a sprint and dragging me along behind her.
I can feel the wind whipping around us as we run, the street lights a blur in my peripheral vision. Over my shoulder the is an enormous roar, I look back to see a massive beast made up of black fur and teeth, even at the speed we are moving the thing is gaining on us. Its burning red eyes lock on mine, and I can feel the hatred pouring of the beast in waves of heat that makes my skin dry up.
Just as the thing gets close enough that I can see the drool dripping from its pointed teeth Sarah takes a sharp turn to the left and begins sprinting up the side of a building. I let out a scream of terror and close my eyes tightly as we fly up the side of the building.
I can feel my consciousness about to leave me when we come to an abrupt halt, and I fall to the ground. Looking up at Sarah I start to scramble away backwards to get away from her. We are on the roof of the building, so I don’t get far.
“What the fuck are you?” I stammer, trying to put as much distance between us as is I can. “What the fuck is going on?”
She doesn’t answer me. Instead, she seems to be holding a conversation with herself “…I understand, how long until extraction?” there is a pause “God dammit, we don’t have five minutes it won’t take long for the Shadebeast to realise where we disappeared to and when that happens we are dead.”
Standing I walk up behind her, grabbing her shoulder and spinning her around to face me. “WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?” I scream at her.
There is a furious roar from below us, and the building shakes, Sarah rolls her eyes and growls at me “Are you happy now? Now it knows where we are. Gods above, just how stupid are you?” without letting me respond she marches off the edge of the building looking over the edge “Fuck, it’s almost here.”
She reaches inside her jacket pulling out a slender, pale stick about the size of her hand.
“I’m going to die!” I say to myself, my legs shaking and frozen to the spot, my brain and instincts are screaming at me to run, but I’m frozen in place.
Sarah looks off into the distance as if straining to hear a low distant sound, after a moment she nods, “Got it. I’ll do what I can.” She turns to me “Stay behind me and stay quiet, we will be out of here soon.”
I start to protest but the look she gives me seems to take away my voice, looking into her eyes I see something I have never seen in someone before, a determination of purpose as strong as steel.
As she turns, back to where the Shadebeast is coming up the building, there is a flash of lightning running through her eyes. This more than anything else sends chills down my spine.
‘what is she?’ I ask myself. Just then the Shadebeast scrambles up over the ledge its eyes locked on me, it snarls and lunges for me.
Sarah steps in between the beast and myself, with a flick of her wrist the pale stick, she took from her jacket, sparks to life and a long blade made of electricity comes out of it. It lights up the rooftop and stops the Shadebeast beast in its tracks.
It starts to snarl, circling around us, keeping on the edge of the light being produced from the blade. It tries to get through the light barrier, and I can’t figure out why it won’t cross the line.
Just as this thought runs through my mind, it leaps straight through the light barrier straight at me trails of shadows streaming from its body as it ripples through the air.
Sarah steps forward, using the momentum of the Beast and the lightning blade to deflect it to the side.
It lets out a howl of pain, and the blade sizzles against its skin where it connects, the smell of burning hair fills the air.
“NOW!” Sarah screams at me.
“Now what?” I shout back.
She runs towards me grabbing my collar again and leaps off the side of the building, dragging me with her.
I let out a scream as we hurtle towards the ground, just above the ground appears a flash of green energy that grows larger. We head towards it at speed and plunge right through the energy barrier…..
We hit the ground but its a lot softer than it should have been, the energy we passed through winks out and we are inside now.
Sarah groans. “I’m overworked.”
